Emirates flight EK-407 fails to take off properly from Melbourne Airport, going 292 metres past the end of the runway before it began climbing . The Airbus 340-541, carrying 257 passengers & 18 crew, almost failed to become airborne and only just made it over the airport perimeter fence. Emirates' pilots on the flight resigned in early April 2009 (the pilot & the co-pilot claim they were forced to quit). The first officer had incorrectly entered a takeoff weight of 262.9 tonnes into the computer used for calculating takeoff performance, when the true figure was 100 tonnes higher. This resulted in take-off speeds & a thrust setting lower than that required for the plane's actual weight. Taking off at 22:31 on a scheduled flight from Melbourne to Dubai, the plane's engines weren't manually pushed to full power until it had come to the end of the runway and after its tail had already struck the runway 3 times. From the end of the runway the plane vanished from sight sinking downslope over grassy ground during which its tail hit the ground a 4th and 5th time, wiping out a stroke light and tearing a hole in the localiser antenna with its left main wheel. For more info see the Australian Government safety report. |

Emirates Flight Crew Training - interview with Christine Negroni, writer for the New York Times
Narrator: If you’ve watched the new TV show PanAm or remember the movie Catch Me if You Can, you’ve probably marvelled at the stewardesses in both of those shows. How did they do what they did in heels and hillbox hats, I know I wondered about that. Aviation writer for the New York Times and travel blogger Christine Negroni is going to demystify all of this for us, right Christine?
Christine: Oh, I’ll do my best at demystifying. I’m always challenged at how they did it all in a girdle frankly.
Narrator: Exactly!
Christine: I’m old enough to remember girdles.
Christine: Well you’ve actually gone through crew training and um gone through some similar sorts of things, you didn’t have to do it in a girdle through did you?
Christine: I did not, I did wear a trainee uniform though just like all of the adorable 20-somethings I worked with during my week ate Emirates flight training, but I essentially have concluded that the Emirates flight attendants are channelling PanAm, they are bringing back to the skies the sort of level of services the level of “we like people” the attitude of we like people and we like travel that you see in the television show of PanAm and that I have heard about many, many times as I have been blogging about the olden days of PanAm.
Narrator: And we should also let our listeners know you actually attended this crew training in Dubai.
Christine: Yes, well the airline is headquartered in Dubai and in order to work for Emirates, unless of course you are one of the local places like the airport of New York or San Francisco, you have to live in Dubai, so everyone, the flight attendants and the pilots and the managers, everybody lives in Dubai, that’s part of the deal.
Narrator: So what kind of people are attracted to this, who were you training with, tell us all about all about it.
Christine: Well, I can say that, I think that the same people are attracted to be flight attendants for Emirates as those that were attracted to be flight attendants for Pan Am back in the 40’s and 50’s and 60’s and 70’s and 80’s and that is people who love to travel, people who like other people, people who have a strong self of their own self image and people don’t mind being subservient and I mean that really in the nicest of ways, they don’t mind that someone is gonna tell them what to do, whether that’s the boss or whether that’s the captain or whether that’s the passenger. So I am not saying that they are in any way, I don’t mean that as subservient in a bad way, but you know that they don’t mind that they’re not the boss, and think sometimes that’s a good way to get good service is to get someone saying ok, well you’re the boss, you’re the person I’m helping and you’re the boss. Now, you know, after all of that, after having people trained to make you feel like your needs are more important that theirs, I will say that the one thing that they spend a great deal of time on ate Emirates flight crew training was safety, and I watched these little young gals and these young men go from you know ”whatever you’d like, I’ll take care of it for you” to “sit down, be quiet, I’m gonna save your life and here’s how it’s gonna be” and that was really a kind of remarkable transformation for me, I learned how the flight attendants handle an unruly passenger, we spent half a day in martial arts training where we learned how to keep a somebody in a seat, how to get somebody on the ground, how to get their arms behind their backs, you know, things that I had no idea that you could even do so you know they really have to do a lot of things, when you’re in the air with a flight attendant, an airline that prides itself on service as Emirates does, and a number of others, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, there are airlines Virgin Atlantic, there are airlines that really do pride themselves on service, but that’s just part of it, the other part of it is you’re in the sky and the only people that can help you up there are gonna be the flight attendants, so they have a very strong dual role and I learnt how they trained them to do that and it was fascinating.
Narrator: it sounds like it was part boot camp and part tent revival meeting and part teambuilding.
Christine: Yes, all of that, you got it, all of that. You also mentioned there was a tent revival and there was, I’m not even allowed to say exactly what went on there, but they do spend a great deal of time trying to make the employees feel like a functioning organism where everyone values what the other does and where they all value their role in keeping the airline aloft.
Narrator: I’m wondering if that feed into the safety aspects of you know keeping everyone in the air all on the same page and keeping everyone safe, I mean if you’re keeping your co-workers safe, if you know them that well, if you move as a unit, then that’s going to keep the passengers safe as well. Do you think it had something to do with that, or was it something even deeper, I don’t know?
Christine: Terry, I think you’ve really hit on something really very important and you only need look at the news in the last few days to see how when it’s not handled right what happens. Passengers who are kicked off of flights for not pulling up their pants or passengers who are kicked off of flights for engaging in profanity with the flight crew. One of the things that the flight attendants at Emirates are taught is that, you know, the passenger’s not always gonna be right, and you can’t always let the passenger be right, sometimes you do have to step in, but they’re taught ways to diffuse these situations so it doesn’t elevate to a situation where someone’s being booted off an aeroplane because nobody really wins in that case. So I think you’re absolutely right, keeping that environment pleasant and happy and with a minimum of attitude actually does work towards safety too because it keeps the stress level down and it is the stress level I think and people I’ve spoken to in the industry tell me that passengers are experiencing much more stress now than they ever did before and you know, they are more likely to sort of fly off the handle when they are, when you know they are confronted with the last straw and we are seeing it in the news almost on a daily basis.
Narrator: Thank you so much for joining us today and if you want to read more about what Christine blogs about and writes about, Christine what’s the best way to do that?
Christine: Well, I’ll tell you I have a couple pieces of news for your show, Emirates just happened to send me an email just before we started talking announcing that they are staring a new service into Seattle so that people can fly into Dubai non-stop from Seattle, also from Dallas Fort Worth and then I would encourage people to come to my blog and read more about what I have to say about travel which is www.gohowknowhow.com, I will be giving out to one lucky reader a first class Emirates amenities kit which we talked about in a previous show, it’s full of nice stuff, it’s a lovely suede bag and I’ll give that out and the details will be on my blog.
Narrator: Thanks so much again Christine Negroni, she’s the travel writer, or aviation writer, for the New York Times and a travel blogger.
